Impulsion is balanced, energetic and controlled.
There is no better feeling than riding a horse with good impulsion because when a horse is as ready to go as it is to slow, the movement is energetic, controlled, and balanced. But how do you achieve that? This is what you are going to learn in this module.
The better a horse’s impulsion, the healthier and happier they are. They are happier because they are in harmony with the rider and it feels good. They are healthier because they are free from anxiety and the horse's weight is balanced rather than overloading the forehand.
Many people confuse impulsion with forwardness, or energy, when in fact it’s about regulated forward energy. It is a balance between the horse being ready to go and ready to slow but, even more importantly, it is a positive mental and emotional state of willingness and harmony with the rider. An unwilling, unmotivated horse does not have impulsion and neither does an emotional forwardaholic.
There is a much better way than pulling against the reins to control the horse, or constantly kicking it to keep going.
Let’s learn all about gait regulation and speed control!
